    Metric Formula

    BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

    Say you weigh 70 kg and stand 1.75 m tall → 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9

    Imperial Formula

    BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height (in)²

    BMI is a handy shortcut, but it's not the whole picture. It can't tell the difference between muscle and fat — which is why a bodybuilder and a couch potato can share the same BMI score. It also ignores factors like age, sex, ethnicity, and where your body stores fat (belly fat, for instance, carries more risk than fat on your hips).
