💡 How time arithmetic works here

Both inputs are converted to total minutes since midnight, then subtracted (difference mode) or summed (add mode). 'Add Time' wraps at 24 hours, so 22:30 + 4:00 correctly returns 02:30 rather than 26:30. Everything is 24-hour format to avoid AM/PM ambiguity — 13:00 is 1 PM, 00:00 is midnight.

Worked example: a shift from 09:15 to 17:45 = (17·60 + 45) − (9·60 + 15) = 1065 − 555 = 510 minutes → 8 hours 30 minutes. If you take an unpaid 30-minute break, subtract it after — the tool doesn't assume break policies, which vary by employer and country.
